A History of the North in 100 Archives
The Together Trust is excited to be part of a new online exhibition celebrating the history of the North.
Running from the 22nd June until the 9th September and with the main hub set in Gateshead and Newcastle, the Great Exhibition of the North, tells the story of the North of England’s pioneering spirit and the impact of its inventors, artists and designers. The exhibition is spread across many different venues, with a series of events on show. Alongside this objects were also nominated from museums across the country as part of an online exhibition, ‘A History of the North in 100 Objects’.
Not to be outdone, a similar project was set up to display the North’s rich heritage in archives, similarly entitled ‘A History of the North in 100 Archives’. These 100 documents were nominated by archives and record offices from across the UK. They represent only a tiny proportion of the many millions of archives held in their collections, and tell only some of the incredible stories of the North of England.
Document included in the online exhibition |
The Together Trust nominated two of its documents for inclusion in the exhibition. One is now being displayed on the website, as a representation of the drive for social reform in the North. An admission page from one of the charity’s orphan home books represents the pioneering work that was being completed in improving childcare in Manchester. It sits alongside other remarkable archives, such as an image depicting the Peterloo Massacre of 1819, a photograph of the construction of the Mersey Tunnel from the 1920s and sketches of George Stephenson’s Rocket, 1822.
It is hoped the three months series of exhibitions and events will give people a new understanding of the way the North has inspired the world for centuries and continues to do so today. Check out the series of online exhibitions or head across to the events hub in Newcastle and Gateshead to find out more.
