Christmas at the Together Trust
Christmas was always a wonderful time for the children of the Manchester and Salford Boys’ and Girls’ Refuges and Homes. Thanks to the generosity of the general public, who contributed special gifts of money to the charity at this time of year, every home across the two cities was able to sit down to Christmas lunch and entertainment. Every child also received a small gift of a muffler or a toy.

Another highlight of the festive season came on St. Stephen’s Day when a street children’s party was held at the Central Refuge on Francis Street. The Refuge lads went back out onto the streets to gather in those not fortunate enough, or who did not desire, to have shelter with the charity. A ‘good’ tea was provided as well as musical entertainment. This was all supplied courtesy of the boys who gave a share of their pocket money towards the costs.
Those not in permanent accommodation with the charity were also not left out. Christmas cards and mottos were sent in the post to all the members of the Newspaper and Caxton Brigades at their own homes, to the boys at the training ship, the Indefatigable and to those who had left the Refuge, including those in Canada.

Just as in Victorian Manchester the Together Trust still appeals for gifts for the children at Christmas time. The charity also has Christmas parties for its various services.
Thank you for supporting the Together Trust this year. A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our readers and supporters!
