Bandmasters from the Refuge
As it’s Friday afternoon it’s time for a short story about one of our accomplished children and how their talents started whilst under the care of the Manchester and Salford Boys’ and Girls’ Refuges and Homes.
Above is the portrait of Joseph Jennings. During Joseph’s time in the charity’s homes he partook in one of the many social activities on offer. For Joseph this was the brass band, which was made up of various members of the charity’s male residents. The band played at various events and entertained many of the Manchester and Salford general public. Here the boys would learn to play a brass instrument under the charity’s band master.
In 1909 a report was written in our monthly magazine in regards to Joseph.

‘Those who know anything about Brass Bands Contests know how pre-eminent is the “battle of harmony” at the Crystal Palace year by year. The coveted prize this year was gained by the Shaw Brass Band, the Bandmaster being one of our old boys, Mr. Jos. Jennings. He is one of the finest euphonium players in the country. We congratulate him heartily, and are glad to think he gained some of his experience in the Refuge band.’
